Praise the Most High God – by Michael Youssef
“Elohim, the Most High God The first name God revealed to humanity was Elohim, a name that appears more than twenty-five hundred times throughout the Old Testament.
God’s people knew that this name referred to the “most high” God or the “highest” God—the God above all creation, the God who initiated and created all of life. Living all around God’s people were pagans who worshiped gods they had fashioned and defined according to human standards. To declare that there was only one God and that He reigned supreme over the entire universe
was a radically different concept. When God’s people encountered nations who worshiped Baal, the god of fertility, the Hebrews responded, “We worship Elohim, the One who authorizes the birth of children.”
When they encountered pagans who worshiped the god Shamish, the sun god, the Hebrews responded, “We worship Elohim. He is the One who put the sun in its place and who governs its course.” Elohim, the God of all creation, includes all three persons of the Trinity.
We know that Jesus was present at Creation. As John writes: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1-3).
We know also that the Holy Spirit was present at creation: “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:2). God the Holy Spirit has been “moving” and “hovering” over life ever since. He is the Creator of all “newness of life” that we experience in Christ Jesus. Praise Elohim!
He is the one true and living God. He alone is God. He is the Creator of each new day in our life, each new experience we encounter, and each new spiritual work in us. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith”.
I praise You, Elohim, as “the great God, the great King above all gods.”
“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.”Psalms 95:3; 96:4
“I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.” For this I praise and exalt You, Most High God. Psalm 135:5-6
“How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you.” Psalm 31:19
