Plug Into The Power of Prayer

Ephesians 1:17

Ephesians 1:17

Here is one of the most powerful apostolic prayers in the whole of the Bible. I want to begin to look at this prayer and explore the Holy Spirit’s meaning and how it relates to us in very practical terms.

This was not only for the Christians in Ephesus but for us today in the 21st century. You can pray this for yourself and others also.

I want to give a few different translations of this verse first.

Ephesians 1:17
Expanded Bible (EXB)

17 asking the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, to give you
·a spirit of wisdom [or spiritual wisdom; or the Spirit of wisdom] and revelation so that you will know him better.

Ephesians 1:17The Voice (VOICE)

17 God of our Lord Jesus the Anointed, Father of Glory: I call out to You on behalf of Your people.
Give them minds ready to receive wisdom and revelation so they will truly know You.

Ephesians 1:17Contemporary English Version (CEV)

17 I ask the glorious Father and God of our Lord Jesus Christ to give you his Spirit.
The Spirit will make you wise and let you understand what it means to know God.

How absolutely vital it is for Christians to understand and to experience this prayer of Paul: “The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him” (Eph. 1.17).

The same way air is vital to life is the same way the spirit of wisdom and revelation is vital to knowing Jesus.

How necessary it is, Paul points out, for us to have the spirit of wisdom and revelation if we are to know God at all.

It means life or death to our Christian life.

There is no way of knowing God and His eternal will except through the spirit of wisdom and revelation.

Paul begins his prayer with these words:

“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so you might know him better”

Why does Paul long for the Ephesian believers to have the spirit of wisdom and revelation?  Well, he tells us if we are to know God at all, it will only be by the spirit of wisdom and revelation.

As a spirit of wisdom [or spiritual wisdom; or the Spirit of wisdom] and revelation is the only means that you will ever know him better.

There are three things Paul prays for and they will only be experientialy  known by having a spirit of wisdom and revelation given to us.

(1) “The knowledge of him” (v.17)—This is knowing God
himself.

(2)That ye may know what is the hope of his calling, what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints” (v.18)—

And (3)What the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe” (v.19)—

This statement shows us what power God will use today to achieve His purpose and to accomplish His plan. Hence it deals especially with our relationship to Him today and also our relationship to His purpose in eternity.

I will explore this prayer closer but right now I want to pray for you,

I’m asking the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, to give you a spiritual wisdom  and revelation so that you will know him better.

I pray also that you will have greater understanding in your heart (the eyes of your heart may be enlightened)  so you will know (understand clearly) the hope to which he has called you and that you will know (understand clearly) how rich and glorious are the blessings God has promised (the riches of his glorious inheritance for) his holy people.

And that you will know that God’s power is very (exceedingly; overwhelmingly) great for you who believe.

That power was demonstrated in the great strength God used to raise Christ from the dead and put him at his right side; in the heavenly realm. In the mighty name of Christ Jesus our Lord.
